Design Elements and Design Principles provide artists with vocabulary describing the visual aspects inherent in any art form. The design elements point, line, shape, mass, colour and texture are combined in many different ways to create different effects. The combinations are identified as the following design principles balance, proportions, rhythm, variation and contrast. Design principles are closely alined with each other.
Symmetrical balance can be defined as an equalising of weight, number, mass or volume. There are three kinds of balance, symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance and radial balance. Symmetrical balance is the repetition of visual elements on opposite sides of a defined or implied centreline. Asymmetrical balance also involves the repetition of elements on two sides of a defined or implied centreline. However, unlike symmetrical balance, the objects are not the same mass, shape, colour or size. Radial balance is when there are visual rays coming out of the centre. This imparts a distinctive and highly dynamic feeling. Proportions are simply the scale of objects as they appear in relation to each other. Rhythm is can be the physical, an aural and a visual experience. Visual rhythms are physical sensations, beats or sounds. Designers employ variation by changing the form, position or condition of any of the design elements. In order to communicate ideas and feelings clearly to the audience, it is important that all elements within a set design, costume design or lighting design are unified. Harmony is a satisfying arrangement of parts consisting of complex but pleasing visual combinations. Negative space is space where there are no objects or performers are. Positive space is the opposite. Point of view is the angle of vision. There are many features of point of view. There is Abstract, thematic, literary, physical, technical and artistic. 1. What style has the set been designed in? You need to give reasons to justify your answer. Why is this style important for conveying the story?
The stage is in the shape of an oval and on the back of the stage, there are flats that are designed to look like shutters to give the illusion that the stage continues forever but they are just in a room. In the center, there is a circular turn table that is separated by two marble pillars. On one side, there is what looks like a pool with umbrellas and lounge chairs. On the other side there is a courtyard with marble floors, where most of the dialogue happens in. 2. What Elements of Design that you see used in the set? Explain how each of the elements are being used. In this video clip, mass has been used to limit and direct the actors during the performance. Texture is used to make the set pieces seem more non-modern. Colors are also used to draw attention of the audience to specific props and people. 3. Once you have been told what principles of design are being used in a specific set (I will come around and tell you), as a group you will construct a definition of those Principles of Design to the best of your ability. Realism was a movement in the 1900's that aimed to replace artificial romance style with more realistic people in more realistic situations. http://www.dictionarycentral.com/definition/realism.html (Soutra Gilmour, the hot house) Impressionism was a style of painting that was developed in France during 1870's, and it concentrated on the visual impression in a scene by the use of primary colors and small strokes to stimulate actual reflected light. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/impressionism (Soutra Gilmour, who's afraid of Virginia woolf?) Expressionism is a manner of painting, drawing or sculpting in which the forms are derived from nature. They are distorted or exaggerated and the colors are intensified for emotional purposes. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/expressionism (Soutra Gilmour, erics) Surrealism was from the 20th century and it was a form in which the artist would combine unrelated events in a very strange and dreamlike way. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/surrealism (Soutra Gilmour, angels in america) Stylization is something that is not done in a natural way to create an artistic effect. http://dictionary.reverso.net/english-cobuild/stylized%20theatre (Soutra Gilmour, the lover / the collecton) Formalism is a stylized mode of production. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/formalism (Soutra Gilmour, down by the greenwood side / into the little hill) Theatricalism was the opposite of reality. http://global.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/590320/theatricalism (Soutra Gilmour, 3 days of rain) Constructivism was developed by the Russians in the 20th century and is characterized by mass volume and shape and the employment of modern industrial materials. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/constructivism This play is about people who are forced to work in a factory. The people working are trying to escape. The set has three large rectangles made of metal with crosses all over the place. There is also an extendable bridge. The rest of the scenery is changed throughout the play. All set pieces are mobile and the actors themselves move everything while the other actors are singing. The large rectangles move forwards, backwards and turn so we can change the set. They are kind of like prisms but have four sides. there are also props and scenery that is brought in and out. The rectangles are designed to look like a factory and the props are all for poor people. The set pieces all support the story. In my opinion, this set is a successful set because it actually looks like a real place where people work. I personally have never been to a factory. However, when I first looked at the set pieces it instantly came into my mind that this is how a factory would look like and this is how they would work.
Point is basically art that is simple. It lets the person who is looking at the art decide what it is. Point is about the attention of the viewer and where the viewer's eyes are.
Lines directs the viewer's eyes around the stage and creates points of interest. Shapes are used to create pictures to express feelings and ideas in a play. The placement of shapes determine the movement of actors Unlike paintings and drawings, mass takes up space. They are basically three dimensional shapes. They also determine where the actors can walk. There is also positive and negative space. We can describe mass using. The measurements height, depth and width. we can hold objects with smaller mass and stand on objects with bigger mass. There is an artist's technique called Chiaroscuro. In Italian, it is translated as light dark. This is basically the use of light and dark in paintings or sculptures to add a three dimensional effect. We get to see what is happening on stage. Black and white is the two most important colors. Black is used to paint set pieces. Draws attention. people wear black clothes to blend in with background. The color wheel has all of the colors and is put in a spectrum in a circle. In order to create a successful set we need to know how people see and respond to colors. Texture refers to a surface of an object. fabrics can have a tactile texture. The main difference between implied and tactile is that the use of sight. The texture also controls mood. Stage lighting is part of implied texture since not directly involved. During this assignment, we received 4 pieces of wood. We were told to figure out what set piece it was and make it. As my group laid the four pieces of wood on the table, we soon discovered that these pieces of wood were for a Jack. After we found out what it was we assembled the Jack and used a drill to insert screws to hold the Jack together. When using the drill to insert screws, we need to make sure that it is set to 7 and we need to have people holding all of the pieces together so that it will go in properly. We also need to have the speed moderately fast because if it is too fast it will grind into the metal and damage it. When we were finished, this is how it looked like.
I think that I need to think about what kind of mood the story is because I need to change the scenery to match the mood. If the mood is sad and I make the protagonists house look cheerful and welcoming, it won't fit the story. I also think that I need to remember what time period it was because depending on the time period, the materials and quality of the buildings change. I think that I should also keep in mind which country the story is from because buildings also differ depending on the country that the play is from. The designers got ideas from various places. For example, Riccardo Fernandez got some of his ideas from the massive real life concrete German bunkers. These designers use the script to design the scenery. For example, Eugene lee used the script to make his very own design of the stage for wicked. They also look for the setting and the time period of the story. I think that we need to learn more about actually making the set. Since designs can be as messy as they want to make it, I believe that we need to focus on the actual set. Finally, I think that we need to know how to show mood within the set. If we want happy scenes to look happy and sad scenes to look sad. If there is a sad scene and it looks happy, then there is something seriously wrong with the play. Some of the terms that I am unfamiliar with is a half inch scale model. Another unfamiliar word is clockwork. Finally, there was the word realism that was unfamiliar.
